Our Partners

The impetus for creating TIWC came from the Skagway Traditional Council (STC) in 2002. They held meetings to gauge community interest in the potential new watershed council, applied for start-up funding, and then allowed the fledgling group to operate as part of STC until TIWC could organize as an independent nonprofit.

The initial funding for establishing TIWC came from a pilot grant project from the Volunteers pulling white sweetclover near the Skagway airportAlaska Department of Fish & Game - Southeast Salmon Sustainability Fund. This program is coordinated by the Southeast Conference, with technical support provided by the Juneau Field Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Other technical support and advice is provided by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska - Natural Resources Department; and the Prince of Wales Tribal Enterprise Consortium, LLC (POWTEC).

We are proud of the partnerships that are forming at the regional, statewide, and federal level; but the backbone of the TIWC is the community organizations that have committed to the development of our watershed council. With support at the local level, we are able to envision a future of improved environmental education, support, protection, and restoration. Here are the current local partners of the TIWC:
